If it's possible to play this game "wrongly" then that's probably me. I only build the most basic machines if even at all. For one of the korok seeds I just picked the guy up and carried him to his friend lol
185
u/Izdoy 2d ago
I "solved" one by just hucking the little guy down the hill and he rolled the entire way to his friend. Laughed my ass off the whole time. Started accidentally, just kept rolling with it (pun intended)
29
u/AnotherLolAnon 2d ago
The one just south of akkala tech lab?
17
u/KletterRatte 2d ago
There was definitely one from the akkala stable with the psychic cucco. I’m pretty sure you were intended to chuck the korok down the hill. My korok bumped into an NPC en route and i couldn’t get him rolling again 😭

u/f-ingsteveglansberg 2d ago
First couple I found, the friend was across a river with a single bridge guarded by a Talos with a Bokoblin fortress built in or on the other side of a gorge. Was surprised this lad's friend was just down the road. Could have built a comfy carriage for him. Or even two wheels on a plank of wood. Instead decided to drag him along as if he just killed Patroclus.
15
u/stormy2587 2d ago
I do the same. I have done this for most korok seeds. I recently strapped one to a wing with a fan on it and he flew him to what I thought was his destination. Only to find a moblin fort. I cleared the fort. And was like where the fuck is this dude’s friend. Realized I had messed up and keyed in on the wrong smoke signal and then just carried him to where I need to go.
I like seeing all the contraptions people make. And occasionally I’ll mess around a bit but building something elaborate can be pretty time consuming.
105
u/TimeTimeTickingAway 2d ago
Of course not! I'm jn the same boat and I prefer it that way. This game is a 'build your own adventure' type sandbox, and I'd much rather my shitty creations be uniquely my own than copy and pasted off of YouTube.

u/lifepuzzler 2d ago
Using the bare minimum materials is the name of the game. It's way more fun to strap yourself to a single block with a couple of rockets and fans and a smattering of batteries than it is to farm it all up and make some sort of sophisticated flying machine.
42
u/animalbancho 2d ago
Well, I don’t know.
Both are pretty fun.
→ More replies20
u/lifepuzzler 2d ago
Sure! Do whatever you want, it's a self-imposed challenge. The best part of the game is that you can spend hours planning a perfect build OR just wing it and still get it done either way.
→ More replies11
u/TorrBorr 2d ago
Especially when the game culls, very aggressively, any of your builds without much of any level of consistency, making very complicated builds that other simpler solutions can do is just a waste of time unless you really get into that kind of thing. I already don't really like forced build mechanics in games as is, but I find it tolerable in TotK. I just hap hazardly throw something together and see "what sticks". After having my hover "bikes" and boats despawn for whatever reason the game decides this time is the time we delete it from the game, I realized crazy builds just are not reliable. Never know for all that time you spent building it and touch something it will cull it.
5
u/huffalump1 1d ago
Yeah this is a bummer! Even simple builds despawn if you walk away. And I mean, just walking to the next hill or something, still in sight.
That combined with builds not persisting in save games makes it frustrating... But also freeing in a "clean slate" sense, where I don't feel like I'm "wasting" components. It's easier to experiment if it's temporary.
I know there's a build library or something later, Which helps I guess.

Fuse it onto another weapon, feed that weapon to the Octoroks in Eldin that spit weapons out repaired & upgraded, go to Tarrey Town to break the fusion without destroying the attached material (your legendary weapon in this case), legendary weapon durability restored.

For me it was upgrading stuff. Like it's just not fun to farm for gems. Luckly I've already done most of what I wanted, but this will shorten my further game time.
I'm mostly enjoying just building wacky machines, but I'm not going to go and farm charges or anything to do it.
92
u/shadowyams 2d ago
I’m ok with gems. Talus are easy enough to farm, and their hearts are decent fusion mats. I’m not willing to spend hours waiting on a dragon, though, so I’m staying on 1.1.1 until I’ve gotten all the upgrade mats I need.

Too many armors were asking for 5 and 10 Red Lizalfos Tails, where at that time I had collected exactly zero. Even after duping for 20 minutes, I just burned through it upgrading armors I wanted to upgrade, and duped some more. No regrets, still having fun!

Back to selling my daily amiibo drops I guess?
And everyone online was saying "Nintendo won't patch it, they never do!"
Edit: game was running so it didn't update. Airplane mode activated!
Can anyone advise if closing the game will update? I don't know if Switch downloads updates in the background like other systems do.
13
u/quhlnaizert 2d ago
The switch downloads updates automatically but only updates if you confirm it. It gives you a prompt every time you start the game where the default selection is update so just be careful when you start the game and select "Start software"

Just go into settings --> system --> auto update (off)

Shield-Hop, go into your menu, Hold five items, and then press B + Y at the same time to exit and sort the menu. It keeps the five items you were holding and also drops them onto the ground, giving you more.
It's been patched out.
→ More replies→ More replies25
u/markandyxii 2d ago
It was menu fuckery. Link can't hold an item while shield jumping, so you would hold an item you only have one of with four items of something that was sitting in the last spot in your inventory. If you opened and closed the menu quick enough, when Link dropped the items it would only register the single item as leaving the inventory and duplicate the other four. The only problem was that this only allowed you to dupe up to 20 of the same item because after 21 items were dropped, they would despawn. So you couldn't keep the same item in the final spot of the inventory
9
u/MadGoat12 2d ago
The shield jump glitch didn't have those limitations. People got to clone 999 diamonds.

I ended up getting there by jumping on one of those eagle glider things at the far end of that starter 'sky island' map, while also holding a second glider. Took off and steered it awkwardly towards the temple of time. Then, as the glider was about to disappear, I'd jump on to the second glider I was carrying and flew it the rest of the way.
Took a few attempts, but how dumb did I feel when I watched a playthrough and somebody just 'ascended' up to the bridge 😐

It sucks for the people that liked the dupe glitch, but personally I refused to use it so it doesn't bother me that it was patched. I would've lost interest in the game immediately if I had used it.
5
u/kevingharvey 1d ago
I'm in the middle. I was never savvy or patient enough to do any botw glitches, but this was too easy to resist. That being said, I set a limit just to sort of make things comfortable starting out, and once I've duped to that, I'm going to update to stop myself from being greedy and to make sure I can still milk the game for a looong time. Played botw a few times a week every week for three years. Planning on doing as much or more with TOTK. Seems like it could really go on forever tbh. I don't think a few extra diamonds will hinder that, but I totally get ignoring the glitch entirely. I was on the fence for a while. I think the patch, and knowing I wasn't online and was therefore able to postpone it, was what made me go ahead and try it.

u/wr0ngdr01d 2d ago
Too many materials and not enough of the rare ones IMO. I did all the dungeons, spent a good amount of time on side quests and exploration, found just enough diamonds for one legendary weapon, two small battery upgrades, and too broke to buy gear after buying the set for death mountain. I get they want you to do a lot but cmon - I shouldn’t be approaching the final boss after 100 hours begging for change. The side stuff simply isn’t rewarding enough.
505
u/oneupdouchebag 2d ago
One problem I've had with both games is that I never want to sell many items for rupees because I don't know what will be needed in bulk for a random side quest or for upgrading. That means I mostly rely on what I'm given from rewards/chests/exploring, which really isn't much considering how expensive some items are.
Add in wanting to save stuff to cook and now to fuse and I really don't bother selling anything at all.
195
u/wr0ngdr01d 2d ago
Totally agree. They should have really scaled up rewards as you progress. I almost sold diamonds because I couldn’t afford the fire resistance set when I wanted to do death mountain. Glad I didn’t but now I don’t even want to use the legendary bow so I don’t have to farm more diamonds so it’s just going to be an inventory blocker until I go for ganon

Also, for those curious, my favorite way to make money is just time-tested hunting, fishing, cooking. No particular place, just go where you've seen wildlife and fire away. Attaching keese wings to arrows makes them fly straight for a long distance for sniping!

You want to go to the depths, much easier to get energy cells there. Large Energy Cells (20 energy cells) are a relatively common chest reward there.
35
u/wr0ngdr01d 2d ago
Thanks for the tip! I’m going to spend some time there now that I’ve done the dungeons before I go on to the endgame. But the depths gives me anxiety so I avoided it until I had to go there
64
u/VDZx 2d ago
Tip to make things less spooky: drive a vehicle, and throw a giant brightbloom seed onto the vehicle. It gives off tons of light and the light will travel along with you.
13
u/MyMurderOfCrows 2d ago
Honestly this is my preference over the light Zonai item since I feel like the light is puny in comparison!
5
u/GMAN095 1d ago
Also, all lightroots are located directly underneath shrines
7
u/waaarg 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yep, this means that you can go through your overworld map and put a marker on the Depths underneath every shrine you’ve found, and then do the opposite and put a marker on the overworld on top of every light root you found. Boom, you’ve just marked a ton of shrines and roots you haven’t got to yet.

That explains why you don't have many materials. There's like 10x more zonite ore and rare ores in the depths.

Also the big enemies in the depths will often drop one of these too when they die. Things like the stone talus's.
Large zonaite 15 of them will get you 100 crystals at the mines down below from the merchants. So once you have lit up some of the light roots you can farm enemy groups after blood moons and get the ore from them.
14
u/zerro_4 2d ago
The only point I'll disagree with is battery upgrades.
Explore the underworld and you'll be able to acquire at least a full battery per hour from mining.

For 5 rock salt at the inn you can get 3 gold hearts and an extra disk of stamina, the fisherman gives free fish and a chest with free money, the cafe gives you a cooked food that you don't know of yet (the most useful thing for someone who hates trying to find good recipes), and the chest game has given me free lynel horns on more than one occasion.
All in all, I'm really pleased with the place.

Thwres a huge difference between faeming/grinding and just... exploring. I also just finished all the dungeons, have like 2/3rds of the lightroots and enough shrines for 3 Stam wheels + 15 hearts. I have 7 batteries and 30 something diamonds... i have never gone anywhere to farm anything except fairies.
Seems like people think having a ton of clothes max upgrsded is supposed to be the goal of the game, and are upset that gakes a ton of effort to get? I have 600+ hours in BotW over many plathroughs and have gotten maybe 20 pieces of gear to 4 stars total lol.

Nah, that's just the way enthusiast communities work. The vast majority of people play without doing any item duping glitches - they just also don't happen to post about that in reddit/other online communities.
I intentionally avoided using the glitch because doing things like that instantly breaks the feeling of progression in a game and honestly, for me at least, ruins the fun. Glad to have the temptation gone at least.

It will download the update on his system. The cartridge can't store anything other than the version of the game that it came with

Game card contents are read-only. The card will always have v1.0.
All updates are stored on system storage or SD card and are somehow merged with the game card code at runtime.

one of these days they are going to hopefully patch in the ability to pet dogs and I will be at a tough crossroads, give up the dupe or never be able to show appreciation to all the good doggos

I'm so annoyed that after six years of development they STILL didn't add petting the good boys! It was probably the most requested feature I saw in the "small things that don't drastically alter the game" category.

I JUST turned off automatic updates. Does that still mean I'll get the update installed the moment I restart the game?

It will ask if you wish to update the software, or start it anyways. Auto updates off just prevent all games on your home screen from auto updating.
I'm also kinda sure Nintendo could force users to update the game at some point.
Late edit: Just realized a vital word was missing, but it seems others got the context right anyways.

can really only do that for online games, and predownload digital games.

Seems like duplication glitch was fixed so take your time to duplicate everything you need considering how easy is to use this trick

Or just turn off updates. Its a singleplayer game so until they release a dlc update or something you can just keep playing as is.

Just bought the game yesterday. Absolutely loving it. My 2 year old daughter and I are having a blast flying the wing glider around.
I’m nervous to continue because I’m worried that I won’t have access to this area and I’ve missed chests with clothes etc. should I do more exploring before I proceed?
edit - thanks for clarifying, everyone! We just got our first heart container!

You'll always be able to access everything and every area in the game. The shrines act as fast travel points.

There's no where in the game that you're locked out from.
You can return at any point in the future.
BotW and TotK are great in the aspect of you can do anything in any order you want.
Though you'll have multiple instances of coming up with some way to do x/y/z and know there must've been a better way (a more intended way) just to find it in a chest a week later when it's no longer really helpful.

Once you complete a shrine, you can always return to it via fast travel. So no worries.

You don’t even have to complete the shrine to access fast travel to that specific shrine! You only need to interact with the pedestal outside of it :)

something to be wary of if your just activating teleport locations and leaving... the shrines where you have to bring the crystal to them to open... if you start the shrine quest from the crystal, you won't be able to activate the teleport point until you turn it in... but if you start from the shrine it activates the teleport and gives the quest.
I learned this the hard way

You dont even have to complete it, just activate them to travel. The ones you need to go back to complete will appear as orange in the middle on your map

There isn’t a single area in the game that you can be locked out of, as far as I’m aware. That’s the whole draw of the game, being able to go anywhere and do pretty much anything.
Anything you miss in an area can be picked up later, but honestly I wouldn’t worry myself with getting everything right away. This is a BIG game. Lots of toys to play with and things to do. Take your time and have fun with your daughter!

There's no online in this game, I'm just turning off auto-updates until DLC comes out.

Money and item glitches in single player games never bothered me. I’m broke irl. I don’t need to be broke in a game

So 1.1.1 still can do the glitch? I haven’t take. The game out or turned off the system in a long while. My version still says 1.1.1. I was gonna try duping things this weekend.
