Anti-Asian hate rally makes perfect sense in that context (linguistically, at least).

Yep, should be Anti Asian-hate rally. XKCD strikes again!

iirc that's actually how you're technically supposed to do hyphenation in English? That is, if you would hyphenate 3 words at once, you instead only hyphenate the first two.
I could be wrong though. I asked an English prof about it years ago and this was their answer, but I never really verified it
18
u/Bugbread 2d ago
That is, if you would hyphenate 3 words at once, you instead only hyphenate the first two.
I could be wrong though. I asked an English prof about it years ago and this was their answer, but I never really verified it
Your English prof was either wrong or explained it poorly. There's nothing technically/grammatically wrong with having multiple hyphens. There are plenty of words/expressions with multiple hyphens ("man-at-arms" "four-year-old" "non-English-speaking" "over-the-counter drugs" "pain-in-the-ass hyphenation rules").
28
u/BestWesterChester 3d ago
I think so. Another option would be anti Asian-hate to be more clear, but I think hyphenating them all together is also correct.
10
u/Onion_Guy 2d ago
The issue is that “hate rally” is already a term, so by separating it from the “anti-Asian” part you get a bit of a whoopsie.
Anti-Asian Hate Rally is the exact opposite meaning of an Anti-Asian-Hate Rally, even though it feels clunky.
3
u/pterrorgrine 2d ago
maintaining "hate rally" as a set phrase is really the only reason not to wrap "hate" up in the hyphenated adjective pile, which is why i'm coming out swinging for "anti-asian-hate rally" -- "hate" feels a little orphaned there at first glance, being a noun and all, but it's definitely a "rally" that is opposed to hatred of asians, and not a "hate rally" of any description
→ More replies15
u/commander_wong 2d ago edited 2d ago
In OP's comic, "Anti-Asian" would be the adjective and would be used to describe the noun, "hate". So it would suggest that it is hate motivated by being "anti-Asian"
Whereas "anti Asian-hate" would be the opposite, as the "anti" is the adjective and "Asian-hate" is the noun, suggesting that OP is against "Asian-hate"

u/bloodfist 2d ago
Probably depends on what style guide you ascribe to. But I personally go with whatever reads the clearest. Usually that's everything but in this case I think "Anti Asian-hate" makes the most sense even though it's definitely grammatically incorrect.

I had a similar experience at a anti asian-hate rally in europe. I showed up and first noticed there were only asian women there. The speaker somehow shifted the talk to feminism and I noticed some of the crowd was looking at me suspiciously like why was I there, even though it was an anti asian-hate rally and I'm asian (guy). I decided to just head home and donate to the victim's family gofundme directly and since that would be a better use of my time.

We got too successful, too fast. Just like every organism, we’ll grow and consume until the environment can’t sustain us anymore
We are really good at manipulating our environment though, out of most of the other things that have lived and died on earth, if any animal can figure out how to make the best of a shit situation, it’s probably us.
Then again, we’re the last remaining human species, so going extinct clearly isn’t out of the question. We just don’t have to deal with other, way different murder monkeys running around and competing with us. Hopefully the race and religious bullshit doesn’t end up coming home to roost when we’re on the verge… that’s my concern

I remember some random singer came to my high school graduation ceremony and talked about how she would get called ugly at school, but then get called beautiful at her modeling job and it was so confusing for her. I think it was supposed to be a speech to inspire kids who got bullied? Then she started singing some cheesy uplifting song. Dude...there were some people in that school with disabilities so severe that they'll never be able to live a normal life. It was amazing how she managed to humblebrag and be tone-deaf and try to paint herself as a victim all in one sentence.

Some people just find a gig that for whatever reason pays the bills. We had a speaker come and give an extended speech about how he was valedictorian and his life was so promising but then he became an alcoholic and had to settle for attending… Rutgers. Half the student body went there each year and it is a huge point of state pride
15
u/AThoughtfulUser 2d ago
We had multiple guest speakers come to our school. The one that annoyed me the most was we usually have a late start Wednesday every month but for our specific Sophomore class they told us to come in early that day to hear a guest speaker. (mandatory or we would be mark as tardy) This dude was so unfunny, and had nothing to say. And to add all to it he said this three times "You all should be happy cause I got you all out of class today". Had me agitated for real.

Hah, that's pretty tone-deaf. I will say, having gone to a pretty decent public school on the East Coast, it does seem like Rutgers gives blanket acceptances to everyone with an okay GPA at the higher-ranked public schools. That's probably why people like him look down on it, even though it is a pretty good school.
9
u/YouHaveToGoHome 2d ago
The mass acceptance is the point though. It’s a state school that actually helps a lot of people from all walks of life reach their dreams at a relatively affordable price tag. And the quality of instruction is excellent; they have one of the top math programs in the country on top of solid engineering and business programs despite “accepting everyone”. What better use of our tax dollars in education could there be?
Didn’t attend Rutgers, but always willing to gas them up more than Harvard (my alma mater) lol. Already had my acceptance in hand and even I was offended not just on behalf of my classmates but as a New Jerseyan that he was talking about attending our state college as a punishment. Some people don’t even get that opportunity!

Went to a Pride thing a few months ago where something similar happened. It was for a very specific issue with a local ordinance meant to shut down Pride this year, and there were three different politicians who were running for positions at the state level who got up on the soapbox just to talk about themselves. First one was queer and active in the local community, it would have been weirder for her not to be there. Very popular among the crowd, and actually helped organize the protest. Got applause, cheering, whistling, the whole deal. Second one was an ally, apparently supportive. Probability didn't need to get up on stage and speak but w/e, support is support, he got a polite golf clap. The third, as far as I remember, I can't actually say if she was pro-LGBTQ+ just purely based on her speech. Didn't address the issue at all. Not a single person clapped, it almost hurt to watch. I think they actually lost votes.

You can tell the work of someone is genius, when you interpret things in a different way the author intended . This is such an instance. Well executed, even if I don't agree with your conclusion (or maybe you did? this is the hallmark imho the your comic is genius, indeed well done). To be clear , what I take from the story is that the lawyer/singer used the indignation of the rally to promote her singing hobby in a raging display of lack of selfawareness and narcissism, and you decided to keep a positive attitude and apply the positive aspect of it to your passion in life. And I think just by thinking like this you are a much stronger person than I ever will be.
